Hard enamel infill provides for a first class finish
Hard-enameling is a multi-stage production method that undoubtedly produces the most beautiful and valuable, highly finished result.
The imitation hard enamel presented on this page and the genuine Cloisonné hard enamel are two different ways to achieve a similar result. The price of raw materials and the number of work steps distinguish the two methods. Imitation hard-enameling is significantly cheaper than a genuine Cloisonne pin.
An imitation hard-enamel pin manufacturing begins with a die-struck or die-cast mold to create the base of the pin from the desired metal. The desired result controls the choice of metal, most often using either copper, brass, or iron, of which iron is the most preferred.
The resulting grooves and cavities in the body of the pin are filled with a paste-like resin that is made into different colors as needed. Each color is filled into the pin separately, and the pin is cured in an oven at about 1700 degrees, which causes the filler to become liquid and flatten into the grooves in the pin.
The curing process causes the vitreous filler to harden permanently, hence the term "hard-enameling".
After curing, the pin is ground with abrasive stones of different roughness and polished to smooth the surface.
The glassy resin manufacturing method produces a stone-hard, shiny jewelry-like finish that mimics genuine Cloisonné pins but is less expensive to execute. Imitation hard-enameling follows the Cloisonné or technique initially developed during the Ming Dynasty.
